How to navigate singles events effectively

Turning up to a singles event can seem overwhelming. Everyone is on the lookout for love, someone else may have eyes on the same person as you and you just don’t know what to say or how to navigate conversations.

We understand! You’re making yourself vulnerable and it takes guts – kudos to you for putting yourself out there.

However, the biggest thing you have to remember is, everyone is in the same boat and you’re not alone with your nerves.

So here are our top tips on how to bring your best self to one of our events and how to navigate conversation with singles.

Are they ready to be approached?

It can sometimes seem a little difficult to approach someone. That’s why we encourage you to use our icebreakers to help you make your move.

It’s always a good idea to gauge if they are in conversation with someone (of course it would be rude to interrupt). If they are in a group of friends, it’s always good to ease yourself in and introduce yourself to everyone in the group. This is a great way to work your way over to who you would like to talk to and continue the conversation.

It may feel a little clunky at first, but with practice, you will get better and gain confidence. Give it a try.

Bank some good conversation starters

Hi, what’s your name? Where are you from? What do you do? How old are you? And breathe!! Does that sound familiar? It becomes repetitive and boring throughout the night and you feel a little drained after some time.

Try not to make it a formality or keep asking tick box questions. Of course, you want to meet someone who aligns with what you are looking for, but keep it light hearted and have fun at the same time.

A great way to start conversation is perhaps to look at something in your surroundings. Perhaps talk about a particular drink or a piece of décor in the room.  running, or even the long waiting times at the bar. Use your imagination and get creative.

This is a great way to see if they are engaging with you and asking questions in return. This will show they are interested in chatting and getting to know you better, make the most of it. If you are feeling really confident, you could ask if they would like to sit somewhere quiet to continue the conversation.

Listen to them

As much as you want to pitch how amazing you are, it is so important to listen to them too.  Be sure to let them have their moment to shine. This will give you a further insight into this person. Do they intrigue you? Do you want to find out more about them.

You can find this out when you give them time to air their thoughts and views. If you’re enjoying the conversation, why not offer them a drink. This will keep you together a little longer to converse.

Keep it current and relevant

Once you’re into a flow, you need to keep the conversation light hearted and fun. Make sure you are aware of some current topics that you can throw into conversation.

This will show your potential date that you have varied knowledge and will seem so much more interesting. It will also give them the opportunity to share their views too. A great way to see if you align in values.

Fake it ’til you make it!

Practice makes perfect! So, the more you put yourself in situations to talk to the opposite sex, the more comfortable it will eventually become.

For now, practice some relaxation techniques prior to heading to an event and understand your value and worth. This will give you a boost and confidence when you walk into an event.

Take a deep breath, smile and simply go for it. Honestly, what is the worst that could possibly happen? You have nothing to lose and the possibility of gaining so much.
